Beach Drive Park Winner of the Town of Stratford’s 2014 Volunteer Garden of the Year Award

On Thursday, September 25, the Town of Stratford's Beautification Committee presented the 2014 Volunteer Garden of the Year Award at the Town Hall Chambers. Janet Lengel graciously received the award on behalf of all the LIA volunteers who worked on this project. It's the first time this kind of an award has been given, and is based on overall appearance, color, visibility, use of annuals and perennials, garden maintenance and grooming…and significance of effort.

SPACE, DESIGN, AND PEOPLE come together in Lordship’s Beach Drive Park located adjacent to the historic sea wall. Lordship Improvement Association has recently created a four season circular planting with surrounding brick walkway. The inspiration of the design layout (including nautical totem) reflects a Newport mansion beach garden theme as the chosen perennial combinations display.

In the spirit of teamwork, this most recent project was completed by all-volunteer support, with an objective toward enhancing greater aesthetic appeal to our community.

Sponsored by the Lordship Improvement Association and a $500 grant for bricks and plantings from the Milford Bank Foundation, leading the team for this project was Kevin Regan, whose landscaping expertise and connections were instrumental in up scaling the project to a professional level. Ann Fariss organized the work parties. Special thanks for a huge discount on the plants from Ganim's Nursery. The bricks were concrete brick pavers called “ Fire Island” blend.

Special thanks to Stratford's public works department and Brian Carey for removing a dead tree and adding the curbing and the benches, which the LIA committee enhanced with roses before taking on this project.

Thanks to all others who donated their time, energy, expertise and donations to this project. They include: Kevin Regan, Scotty LaMorte, Dick & Lynda Williams, Kathy Alagno, Patti Pelley & Rod Bergen, Phyllis & Joseph Satin, Peter Brawley, Tomiko Case, Janet Benedict, Janet Lengel, Charlie Lautier, Noel Onkey, Marianne Cox, Lynn Daughterty, Josh Zampedri, Ann Peterson, Judy & Manny Psaltis and Aimee Sprogis.

Beach Drive Park is located at the seawall in Lordship.
