JANUARY: Carol DeCapua’s Winter Lighthouse on LIA 2027 Calendar
Updated: 3 days ago
(Part 1 of a series)
Let’s take a pre-dawn winter walk on Lordship’s Russian Beach. Bundle up. And pull on boots because you’ll be trudging through snow today, December 28, 2025.
At 6:53 am, near the “fisherman’s path,” look east and catch your steamy breath at the sight of brilliant orange dawn behind the silhouetted Stratford Point Lighthouse. A comforting beam from the lighthouse alerts fishing boats about rocky danger. And that beam kinda warms us, too.
What? You slept through it all? No matter. Carol DeCapua captured the scene on her cell phone, and let the LIA feature it as the cover of the LIA’s 2027 ‘Lordship for All Seasons’ calendar, plus as the featured photo for the month of January.
Thanks, Carol!
Carol, of course, is the extraordinary photographer who daily rises before dawn for a four-mile trek through the Lordship Bluffs, Russian Beach and Short Beach, capturing fascinating sunrises, sea shells, waves, dunes, fishing boats, birds, deer, bunnies, artistic arrangements of the day’s beach treasures, and more.
Then around 9 am, back home with a relaxing mug of coffee, Carol posts her captioned journey on Facebook. Her followers reply with dozens of ‘LIKES’ and comments. If you’re on Facebook, be sure to FOLLOW her.
‘AN EVERYDAY ART SHOW’
We asked Carol what motivates her daily photo journeys.
“I started my morning walk in 2016,” she explains. “I was out of shape. So I decided to take sunrise photos and post one a day on Facebook for the entire year. And I succeeded.
“Then the FOMO (fear of missing out) set in, and I just had to go out and see what was out there to see. And I’m never disappointed.
“It’s been eleven years now and I haven’t missed many of our beautiful mornings. Walking in Lordship has been my gym, school, church, therapist, and an everyday art show that can’t be beat. It keeps me online, too.
“I’m not sure I can ever stop.”
Carol, please keep your alarm clock on.
