LIA Seeking Board Position of Secretary

The Lordship Improvement Association, Inc. (LIA), seeks self-nominations for the Board position of Secretary.


LIA and its Board

The LIA is a non-profit, volunteer organization operated by a 6-member volunteer Board of Governors. Since 1924, the LIA’s mission has been to enhance and preserve the distinctive character and natural beauty of the Lordship waterfront community. The LIA serves as Trustee of The Bluffs, an approximately 9-acre coastal Land Trust, comprised of a lawn, slope, dunes, and Russian Beach. As Trustees and Stewards of The Bluffs, the Board holds a fiduciary responsibility to seek to preserve and protect this area for current and future residents of Lordship.


Secretary of the Corporation

Purpose: To ensure accurate documentation and maintenance of board and organizational records.

The Secretary of the Corporation shall:

  • prepare the Meeting Notice, Agenda, and Minutes of the Board of Governors meetings;

  • have charge of such documents and records of the Corporation as the Board of Governors shall designate;

  • furnish such reports as may be required by the Office of the Secretary of the State;

  • authenticate such records of the Corporation as by-laws require;

  • see that all notices are duly given in accordance with the provisions of Bylaws or as required by law;

  • be custodian of the corporate records;

  • and, in general perform all duties incident to the office of Secretary and such other duties as from time to time may be assigned to the Secretary by the President or Board of Governors.


Minimum qualifications for an LIA Board member:

  1. Be a current member of the LIA;

  2. Live in Lordship;

  3. Be available to attend monthly evening Board meetings;

  4. Be willing to serve on committees and attend committee meetings;

  5. Be prepared for Board or committee meetings by reviewing agendas and meeting minutes, and completing any agreed-upon activities on a timely basis;

  6. Be collaborative, a team player able to work well in a group;

  7. Stay informed of Board and committee matters and actively participate in discussions and decisions;

  8. Be proficient in Word, Excel and Powerpoint

  9. Be involved in various LIA events when available;

  10. Become familiar with LIA Bylaws, land trust standards and 501c3 non-profit regulations.


Any of the following additional qualifications would be a bonus:

  1. Experience on a non-profit board and familiarity with 501c3 non-profit regulations;

  2. Knowledge of environmental-related issues with a focus on preservation;

  3. Fundraising and/or grant writing experience;

  4. Leadership and verbal communication skills;

  5. Written communication skills (newsletters, reports, studies, etc.);

  6. Strategic planning experience ;

  7. Community coalition building.
