A BIG THANK-YOU TO SATURDAY’S LORDSHIP BLUFFS & BEACH CLEANUP VOLUNTEERS

The Lordship Improvement Association (LIA) extends a big thank-you to the many amazing volunteers – adults, teens and kids – who picked up winter trash and debris and worked on conservation projects Saturday during the annual Lordship Bluffs & Russian Beach Cleanup.
Deep appreciation also goes to Kelly Kerrigan, the Town of Stratford’s Environmental Conservation Commissioner, and the town’s Department of Public Works for providing supplies and pickup of the collected trash and debris.
“What a wonderful Earth Day celebration!” says Christine Griffin, chair of the LIA’s Education and Environment Committee, who organized the event.
The morning’s cool temperatures in the mid-40s were met by neighborly warmth and enthusiasm to prepare the nearly 10-acre coastal tract for the summer enjoyment of Lordship residents. LIA Board members also used the occasion to chat with residents.
“So many projects were accomplished,” Christine notes. For instance:
- Many trash bags were filled with debris, including beer cans retrieved from dense thickets.
- Rocks were brought from the beach to line the paths to protect prickly pear plants and hold back weeds. Large rocks were also placed below culverts to prevent water erosion, and volunteers said they would continue this work.
- Nests were found in two bird houses for migratory Tree Swallows – built and installed last year by Eagle Scout Charlie Welch and Troop 76 - and the remaining houses were cleaned.
“Spring has sprung and we are engaging with our environment,” she says.
