DAFFY LORDSHIP – DID YOU KNOW?

We’re loving the festive daffodils showing off all over Lordship now, in yards, at the base of street signs, in the LIA’s community gardens – and especially on the Lordship Bluffs, where they’ve cascaded over the edge and down the slope. (These photos are from the Bluffs and nearby Triangular Rose Garden at the foot of Maple and Ivy Streets).
Besides their cheerful beauty, what else should we know about daffodils? We asked Christine Griffin, chair of the LIA’s Environmental and Education committee, and she informs us that …
· The daffodil is Stratford’s town flower
· There are 27,000 unique cultivars of daffodils (!)
· Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses 11 was buried with daffodils
· Daffodil bulbs grow for three to five years – but often indefinitely
· Daffodils contain lycorine, which is harmful to humans and animals
· Compounds found in daffodils help with dementia research
PS: Thank you for not trampling on or picking the daffodils in public areas. The LIA has instructed its contractor to mow around daffodils on the Bluffs.
