Your help will be welcome as you join your Lordship neighbors for a morning of fun and accomplishment in the annual Russian Beach & Lordship Bluffs Cleanup this Saturday, April 25, from 9 am to noon, sponsored by the Lordship Improvement Association (LIA).
It’s an opportunity to help keep Russian Beach and the Bluffs a place for all Lordship residents to enjoy this summer. All new LIA Board members will be lending a hand, as well, and look forward to meeting and chatting with you.
Please meet at the Lordship Bluffs on Park Blvd. at 9 am. The LIA will supply garbage bags for removal of winter debris, and recommends that you wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Large pruners would be appreciated for cutting small limbs.
There will be plenty to do!
Christine Griffin, the LIA’s Environment and Education Committee Chair, notes that the morning’s projects will include: removing winter beach debris from the Seawall to Cove; removing invasive mugwort plants; adding stones to distressed culverts to help disperse water; removing daffodils that migrated down the Bluffs slopes and replanting them on the Bluffs edge; tossing broken limbs into areas of Bluffs depressions to support wildlife, and more.
She also asks residents who are trimming trees in their yards to consider carrying the trimmings to place behind the snow fences.
“This helps to improve and save dune areas from wind, rain and high tide erosion,” she explains. “When we cleared, mended and weeded the Trial Pollinator Garden,” she adds, “we noticed cement pieces and larger rocks thrown over the Bluffs next to the Laurel Street entrance. If anyone has time, we could use those cement pieces and rocks along the side of the stairs to prevent the invasive plant invasion. Those vines can tangle ankles if left to grow.”
Supported entirely by annual donations, fundraising and conservation-related grants, the non-profit LIA is the trustee of this protected resource via a land trust. For more, visit www.LordshipCT.org.
