Great news! The Lordship Improvement Association (LIA) has been awarded a $6,000 grant as a kickstart to its multi-year Lordship Bluffs Restoration Project, a collaboration with experts featuring planting native trees and shrubs, managing invasive species, and enhancing pollinator and wildlife habitats on Stratford’s Lordship Bluffs.

As a land trust, the all-volunteer, non-profit LIA manages and preserves the Bluffs overlooking Long Island Sound for the enjoyment of Lordship residents. The nearly 10-acre parcel includes a wide lawn, colorful pollinator and wildlife habitat with trails, and Russian Beach.

State Rep. Joe Gresko last Friday notified the LIA about winning the Climate Smart Planning Grant, administered by the Connecticut Land Conservation Council (CLCC), whose mission is to elevate and strengthen land conservation in Connecticut (https://ctconservation.org/about).

“The grant will be used to obtain a comprehensive plan for the restoration of 1.9 acres of the Bluffs for future generations,” explains LIA Associate President Emily Viner, who spearheaded the grant research and application. The LIA must match 25% of the grant with its own community donations when using the funds.

When announcing the Bluffs Restoration Project earlier this year, the LIA noted applying for the grant, and collaboration on the project with the CLCC, the Connecticut Audubon Society, environmental consultants, and both state and local leadership.

“It’s incredibly exciting to collaborate with so many passionate individuals who care about the critical 9.7-acre habitat here in Lordship that has been entrusted with us for protection and care,” the LIA stated.

The site has already been visited by CLCC leadership and a local conservationist.

Going forward, local volunteers will be appreciated to help with restoration projects in scheduled work parties. To volunteer for this – or for any aspect of LIA environmental or community gardening activities - please email LordshipIA@gmail.com.

“This grant is not just about the money,” adds LIA Board member/Treasurer Sue Birge. “It’s an opportunity for us to redirect our focus to better align with our mission, to build coalition and community in our neighborhood, and strategically preserve the Bluffs for years to come.”

The LIA thanks all in the Lordship community for their support. www.LordshipCT.org.
